Been experimenting with “social friendly” quote images for TIV. Maybe a Pixelfed account is in our cards…

Thinking about selling a couple of my keyboards to fund the purchase of a HHKB… anyone looking? I have a Pok3r (blue switches) in a wooden case with SA (+ original) keycaps, full size Ducky (brown) with SA (+ original) keycaps, MiniVan (black) with DSA and SA keycaps, and and full size realforce.

Man, I really love my cowboy hat. Will probably take a bit of time to get over the mental stigma/anxiety of being “that guy” though…

Lastly, a collection of posts on OBTF’s. Let me know if there’s anything else out there worth reading.

Debating how deep I want to go with the OBTF idea or if some of this should be separate Bike files…

It’s been a whole month without drawing a grub… I think it’s time I get back to it!

Still very early, but finally starting to put pen to paper on what “humdrum industries” can really be.

As I’ve become obsessed with At Textual as a font, I tried whipping together a new humdrum industries logo with it.

“On a steel horse, I ride”

So there’s a pop-up shop in Napa… and I went and bought a too expensive, black, flat-brimmed cowboy hat… 🤠 🤦‍♂️

Fun to see a little shout out from Manu linking to foofaraw this morning 😊 manuelmoreale.com/the-kitch…

Trying to do a better job of utilizing tools and keyboard shortcuts on my Mac. Any other utilities or shortcuts you’d recommend that are missing from this list?

So there’s the Harvard Business Review, MIT Technology Review, Columbia Journalism Review, and the Yale Review. What other big institutions have highly regarded publications like this?

I think I’ve given up on Obsidian. Giving Craft a go again…

How great is it that we got two shows about men and their mustaches at the same time? John Wilkes Booth who doesn’t want to shave his in Manhunt and Alexander Rostov meticulously caring for his in A Gentleman in Moscow.

Thinking about moving back to Safari (from Arc). The killer feature for me on Arc was 1Password worked seamlessly vs Safari. Anyways… someone previously linked to ways to configure Safari more like Arc. Anyone remember this/have a link?

I’m 70% sure the term “man cold” originated because of how big of a baby I am when I’m even slightly under the weather.

I thought I’d try out Orion to use my iPad as an extra screen for my MacBook, but apparently USB-C to USB-C doesn’t work… so I have to get a USB-C → HDMI dongle, but my MacBook doesn’t have HDMI, so I’ll have to use an HDMI → USB-C cable… so USB-C → HDMI → USB-C… Oi…

The iA Writer notebook is up for preorder at $74… I knew it’d be expensive, but I couldn’t imagine it being that expensive…

🌐 On my way to Vegas for two nights to go to a concert at the sphere tomorrow.

I’ve been doing a lot of research into TTRPG’s lately (as someone who has never played…) It’s inspired me to try to create something that’s designed to be played solo, but has monthly expansions where players can have inputs that effect the game world. D&D meets WoW in a sense…

And don’t forget to refrigerate after opening and use it up quickly.

If you make Negroni’s at home, please, please, please, don’t cheap out on the vermouth. Cocchi, Dolin, and Antica are all great and not too much more than Martini & Rossi.

Ewan McGregor is so wonderfully fantastic in A Gentleman in Moscow.

I’m probably wrong… but I feel like the entire time I lived in Seattle, the Mariners only ever played the Cubs at Wrigley. Now the first season I don’t live in Seattle and the Cubs are finally at T-Mobile Park… 😔

So behind on my daily Grubs… 🤦‍♂️

Anyone out there potentially interested in doing a ttrpg type thing over Zoom…?

We have stickers! Just placed the first order for foofaraw stickers. They are up for preorder on Kofi and I should have them in hand in two weeks tops. We’ve got a standard matte pink foof and a glossy S3 foof. Worldwide shipping available.

One of the best parts about having open submissions is getting to read a lot of cool stuff, even if it’s not a fit for foofaraw. Given our acceptance rate is less than 10%, it means a lot of rejections. I can’t personalize every rejection, but when I do, getting responses like this make my day.

Whipped up a super quick logo for an idea I’ve been tinkering with for a bit now: humdrum industries

I love that someone is still sitting on my old domain, humdrum.life, like anyone is going to pay them enough to recoup those costs 🤣

I’m not saying they will necessarily live up to those names, but the skill and shot-making is there. And because they play below the rim, if you actually like basketball and not just dunking/feats of athleticism, the actual strategy, defense, and teamwork on display is so much better.

It took the NBA about 30 years (1949-1979) before it really took off as Magic and Bird entered the league. The WNBA has now been around for 27 years and Clark and Reese have a similar collegiate rivalry going.

I’m a huge fan of Dawn Staley and the team she’s built, but I’d also like to see Caitlin Clark win one and build a bigger rivalry with Angel Reese as they both head to the W.

Mondays foofaraw is going to look drastically different. Some people might hate it, but I love it.

I haven’t figured out exactly how I’m going to do it yet, but I think I’m going to do a little “fundraiser” that if I can add 8 more paid subscribers to foofaraw by a certain time, I’ll commit to paying for and publishing one piece of fiction every week—along with the features we already do.

🦹‍♂️ Since I’m back in Chicago, I went to my old comic book store that I haven’t been to since 2019. It’s a bit run down, but it brought back tons of Wednesday memories.

😵‍💫 Still in a daze after my red eye to Chicago and then sleeping for six hours…

foofaraw just received its 100th submission since being listed on the submission grinder two weeks ago. Still wild to me.

Didn’t realize you could have email addresses with multiple domains on a single Fastmail account. Getting some emails set-up for foofaraw now.

I realized I was getting old when I started to love watching birds on my balcony or on walks…

Been thinking about what foofaraw could like like in audio… maybe a bite-sized podcast? Maybe a quick segment on radio free fedi during theNews or theTrafficReport..?

So far I’ve accepted 4 of 22 with those additional 15 to still get through.

I really didn’t expect to get this many submissions to foofaraw considering our low rates. It’s been so fun and I still have 15 to go. The toughest part is reading something that you go back and fourth on though… I’ve been sitting on two I couldn’t decide on and finally decided to reject…

My second interview as part of the Consumption Gumption series is live on foofaraw.press with @maique!

It’s time!

What do people do with the back-up codes they receive for logins? I feel like putting them in 1Password where my 2FA is set-up is a bit pointless…

I mean, I’m a Liverpool fan, but four goals in 14 minutes… Brutal… At what point do you just feel bad for Sparta…

I’m now up to 3 active blogs on Blot, one on micro.blog, one on Pika, and two Buttondown newsletters (plus a fourth blog on Blot I’m not doing anything with). No, you have a problem…

Given the state of Every Noise at Once, does anyone know if Spotify gives visibility anywhere to the micro-genres they assign artists? Or any other sources that show similar info?

Quite the first day of foofaraw submissions. It’s been a ton of fun although it’s definitely not a pace I can keep up with once the day job gets busy again…

Just accepted the first piece of fiction submitted to foofaraw. Very excited that it’s finally coming together how I originally envisioned way back when.

Want: blogging platform that, if you post a link, it will show a link preview like Mastodon, Twitter, Discord, etc.

Been thinking about mymind and Raindrop again… this never ends well…

Big milestone today as I’ve drawn and published a new Grub every day for 100 days straight through my Grub newsletter—dating back to November 30th. I’m now up to 584 total Grubs drawn and recorded.

For anyone that reads foofaraw, I’m looking at starting a “letters” section where I publish feedback/thoughts on movies, tv, comics, music that people send to me… Trying to decide if I should feature these within their related section or reserve them all for the end…

Part of me (a large part, might I add), really wants to start an internet radio station…

I’m trying to reduce the money I spend on bigger news subscriptions… do I have any close internet friends that subscribe to FT/Bloomberg/NYRB (or might want to) who’d be willing to share credentials in exchange for ones to New Yorker/Economist/LRB/Puck..?

I wish I actually knew how to build stuff… it’d be cool to have a tool that took everything in an email folder and rss folder, formatted them, and then printed them out as a booklet every morning at 8:00 AM for a little personal newspaper. All I’d have to do is wake up grab it, fold it, and read it.

Since I was basically five years old, the only shoes I’ve ever owned (with the exception of dress shoes) have been Nike/Jordan. However, I’ve been eyeing some Blundstones and Birkenstocks for awhile now and finally decided to take the plunge (via early b-day presents from my wife and mother… 😜)

Spent the morning tightening up the CSS on foofaraw.press. Everything seemed so spread out before, but now the spacing (and some other little features) feel a lot better now.

I’ve given up on trying to create a linkable ToC as an image, either an img map or a class background and sort of building on the fly… I think the plain ol' text ToC works just fine.

I think I’m once again feeling the urge for a public notebook that doesn’t feed into social media…

Think I got the format for a ready-to-print PDF version of the newsletter nailed down.

Only caught the last 25 minutes, but boy does Liverpool look terrible. And tired.

Think I’m going back to digital comics… the experiment was fun while it lasted, but getting the issues I actually wanted every week became a chore and now my local shop is closed for an ownership change and I don’t know how long that’s going to last…

For the folks who have no interest in my newsletter, just wanted to share this wonderful character logo @andycarolan@social.lol made for it. I dub thee “the foof.”

My World Clock for times I’m tracking

I’ve given up all previous notes apps (Obsidian, Roam, Notes, Workflowy, Notion, Craft, iA Writer, etc. (with the exception of Drafts)) and just gone all in on Bear. WIll it last? Nobody knows. But I feel like this time, it could stick.

I’m working on too much stuff that’s not my actual job right now (and that’s most likely being ignored 😝), but as soon as I get my head above water I’m going to be launching foofaraw+ (name subject to be changed).

Well that was the opposite of fun…

Feeling surprisingly good about the Liverpool match. They were clearly outplayed, but to enter half even was big. Klopp is one of the best at halftime adjustments so they should come out strong. Plus Nunez, Thiago, and Robertson on the bench, depending on the health of the latter two, will help.

⚽️ Watching Liverpool take on Arsenal. Big match to leave Arsenal in their dust and hold their lead over City.

I think it was Jack who previously talked about printing articles, so I’ve been digging around trying to find a good way to do this. Printing from Matter on Mac or iOS works exceptionally well. Thought I was going to switch to Omnivore, but this is a gamechanger.

I wish there was a read-it-later app that automatically deleted articles after x days.

I commissioned five banners from five different designers for my foofaraw newsletter and I’ve gotten two back so far and I am completely over the moon. I know most peeople probably don’t care or pay too much mind to the banners, but it’s so fun seeing people take a small idea and make it beautiful.

Anyone know if any rss apps that have a one swipe action (or similar) to send to Omnivore?

Going to publish an Obsidian vault in a bit, but need help naming it. Will post a poll on Mastodon soon, but I’m thinking something that pairs nicely with humdrum + foofaraw. Currently in the running: kerfuffle, flimflam, mumbojumbo, rigmarole, and lollygag (open to other suggestions…)

Broke a lot of internet rules today… changed the domain for my micro.blog from humdrum.tiv.today to micro.tiv.today and my image blog from nonsense.tiv.today to images.tiv.today. I’ve got no idea how to redirect or anything like that, but im 99.99% sure no one is following those by the url or rss.

We made it to 10 guest Grubs thanks to this killer contribution from @tylersticka who graciously whipped one up in exhange for a small donation to Prevent Cancer Foundation. Grubs and Good! Between the guest Grubs and my daily Grubs, I think this has officially become my favorite project.

Finally got access to Arc for Windows only to be told the OS on my work machine is 0.0.03 versions too old…

In honor of my 💽 2023: Top Ten Albums list and my number one album, I’m sharing today’s Grub because I spent way too long on it… I drew over 80 Grub eyeballs in total on the various cartoon characters scattered throughout this album cover. Most of them blend in pretty nicely too.

Decided to give Omnivore a try since they also have an Android app. Given my desire for an Onyx Palma, having a read-it-later that’s multi-platform feels essential.

Inspired by @maique I started playing around with the idea of moving The New Grub Times from Buttondown to a PikaPods Ghost, but apparently you have to pay an exorbitant amount to MailGun if you want to send emails..? Still might do it. NGT would be fine as just a blog without a newsletter.

🏔️ Watching Society of the Snow.

I’m looking at getting a pair of Birkenstock’s… I need some help deciding… have a preference?

Went ahead and ruthlessly deleted probably 70% of the apps on my phone. No more news or social media, plus a bunch of other crap. Only apps not shown here that made the cut are banking, food ordering/reservations, and apps for my day job.

headymetal

My wife’s AirPods Max stopped working… anyone have suggestions for fixing. We’ve tried:

  • Forgetting device from her phone
  • Resetting by holding both buttons until the light flashes amber 3x
  • Restarting phone (and turning off/on Bluetooth)
  • Charging fully and trying all of the above again…

Absolutely love when you get a meeting cancellation at 5:15 AM and then a text at 5:45 asking where you are…

📺 Quite enjoyed the first episode of The Brothers Sun (Netflix).

Starting to take my search for a new job a little more serious this year. If anyone works somewhere or knows someone hiring in the PM space (program, product, project), remote or Bay area, please keep me in mind. I consider myself more of a jack-of-all-trades and also have experience as a strategy consultant and analyst.

Rather than work on the report that’s due before Monday morning (that I’m way behind on), I think I’m going to organize my Are.na channels and name all of my blocks…

Recent-ish print acquisitions featuring: @rnv @kaa @goodenoughllc@mastodon.world @monteiro@simian.rodeo and more.

Debating plugging in the RSS for my daily Grub newsletter to syndicate to micro.blog and mastodon…

I’m committing to drawing a Grub everyday in 2024 through this newsletter, but today’s is pretty great, if i do say so myself. So I wanted to share it here too. I present to you: Streamboat Grubbie.

🤧 Still feel like death…

😷 Been sick the last couple of days and it feels like it’s only getting worse… just been sleeping and catching up on comics.

And it didn’t show up….

This one took me forever and I’m still not super happy with it but I gave up.

🚙 On the road to San Diego now. Wife is driving this leg.

🥙 Stopped in Ojai for lunch

🏖️ Spent the night in Santa Barbara last night. Still one of my favorite places.

My first Pika Page is my Negroni Tracker. Ranked with location, gin (if known) and an estimated price. This first batch is done by memory…

I’m officially up to 9 Grubs drawn by other people. Wanna make it 10..?

This might be the coolest and wildest Grub someone has drawn for me. Courtesy of Tony Tran.

My first time in a comic store on a Wednesday for new releases since I went all digital on March 14, 2012. May have gone a little overboard.

Designing a Grub Pokémon card to go out with my first letter has been a ton of fun.

🛬 Time for a 90 minute drive to pick up my wife from the San Jose airport. Then a 90 minute drive back…

I’ve got analysis paralysis for what to work on… https://kinopio.club/-too-much-on-my-mind-qOVFeEA26-X_RcX_8i4OG

It’s one of those mornings where I get 90% through unloading the dishwasher only to realize I didn’t run it last night… trying to figure out what I put away now…

Right now, I’m thinking my mailed letter would contain three things: 1) a double-sided PDF letter 2) a mini-zine created by hand and photocopied and 3) a grub (either one nicely designed and printed or a unique quick sketch for each recipient). This would all be black and white.

Does Ivory have a way to remove mentions from the Notifications pane on Mac..? I feel like this was something discussed day one… but I still have to go into each to get rid of those pesky blue dots… 🥺

Went ahead and updated my Central Hub on @kinopio@pkm.social too.

Another quick update to the About page to point out there are no trackers, cookies, or any analytics on TIV nor do my newsletters track opens.

Technically my blog roll still needs links… ughh

Alright… I finally went ahead and updated the About (and blogroll), Newsletters, and Contact (w/ Letterbird) pages on tiv.today

All this talk about Apples Journal app and my only thought is: I should try to get a Day One routine going again…

My daily Grub newsletter lost it’s first subscriber today… goodbye Eric, wherever you are 😿… honestly, I’m surprised it took this long 😆

I think I might set up a Google form and include as many options as I can think of for all four categories to try to make it as easy as possible for people to contribute top tens…

If you’ve made or are planning on making any top ten lists (movies, tv, albums, comics) let me know where I can find em. I’d love to try to compile some community best of lists. Album Whale and Letterboxd are great places to create lists. Blog posts, replies here, or my contact form work too.

Really excited for where foofaraw is headed in the new year. Some new banners are imminent to give it a fresh coat of paint, an artist is coming on-board as a third contributor alongside the two excellent folks who recently joined, and maybe even a fourth! Plus I’ve got my daily grub newsletter 😝

So I’ve started commissioning original artwork for my HELLMODE fanzine… this thing is going to cost me a small fortune… if you think you might be interested in a 48+ page color zine with lyrics, essays, and original art, let me know so I can try to plan on not losing my house… 😜

Any font folks out there have any good suggestions for a typeface that gives the vibes of movies or the big screen (vague, I know…) Right now I’m trying Bebas Neue as it gives kind of a tall and bold feeling.

I forgot how much I loved coming up with new ideas to draw my grub everyday.

New guest Grub contribution from Garrett Elton.

I love the fact Buttondown allows people to subscribe via RSS. I don’t do any analytics on my blog and I ignore the number of subscribers to my newsletters, but one sliver of me is bummed that there’s no way to know when someone subscribes via RSS.

Anyone ever used an A7 notebook…? Looking at using one of these for 2024 and deciding between A7 and A6-. Idea is to use it for my journaling vs my Field Notes as my scrap.

And now, a preview of what’s coming in tomorrow’s foofaraw newsletter…

Here I am considering paying Buttondown way too much money so I can have multiple newsletters on one account in order to do a daily newsletter where I just send a new Grub everyday that no one will actually sign-up for…

🍷 Mom came in town for the holidays so we are going to hit up some wineries for the first time since moving to Napa.

I think I’m making the executive decision of forgoing the Hobonichi Techo and Weeks in 2024 and trying to go back to my Field Notes books.

I’ve got the next issue of nonsense. which willl cover Dec/Jan. I’ve got the first issue of a tiny, infinite internet where I’m collecting my favorite places on the web (and trying to get quotes from creators). A mini-zine album review of HELLMODE, a 2023 Year in Review, and Three Years in Seattle.

I’ve got five open zine projects on my desktop that I keep going back and fourth between right now. It’s getting to the point where I’m in a paralysis on what to work on at any given moment.

Another profile picture from @andycarolan@social.lol based on what I actually look like. Not sure what I’m going to do with it because I love the current one so much.

humdrum has a new look thanks to @andycarolan@social.lol

If anyone is still waiting for Puzzmo access, here’s an extra key (that needs to be solved still 😝)

Currently have Barbie above Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Asteroid City in my WIP Top Ten list of 2023 movies.

🦩 Finally sitting down to watch Barbie

🏀 Watching the Nuggets v Mavericks and wallowing in the Bulls loss... again...

Stopping Before We Lose It All — playlist cover

Apparently 1989 (Taylor’s Version) came out today.

Five iOS notifications about 1989 (Taylor’s Version)

Bulls opener at 5PT and Wemby debut at 6:30PT. Pumped for tonight.

Thinking of firing up a fourth Blot blog tonight to be focused entirely on sports (mostly Chicago, but leagues in general too)… something like “sportsball.tiv.today” maybe…?

😫 Been battling a migraine all day…

Joining an Are.na channel walkthrough live on Zoom for the first time. Excited to watch and learn.

😵‍💫 New post appears on site but not on Home page — Blot

This has been happening to me for a month or two on my Blot site (this is coming from micro.blog) and it’s pretty infuriating. It comes and goes, but my last five or so posts over the last three days are still missing…

Anyone have suggestions for a solid desk (maybe standing…?) for home that has a decent amount of surface area and doesn’t break the bank…?

CONNOR BEDARD WITH HIS FIRST NHL GOAL!

It’s Bedard o’clock!

I’ve officially moved my newsletter to Buttondown. So if you’re one of the people who hate Substack or prefer RSS, now’s a great time to jump aboard. I cover the shows, albums, comics, and movies coming out each week.

I think my biggest problem with paying for search is I’ve gotten into this habit where I know what I’m looking for, but googling has become instinctual for getting to specific websites, Wikipedia/IMDb pages, etc. Until I can shake that habit (if I even want to), I don’t think I can pay for search.

I’ve feel like I’ve seen (maybe even used) a web app for markdown writing that’s just a clean, plain writing surface with no buttons or nothing. Ring a bell to anyone…? Basically iA Writer on the web…

At this point, I feel like Liverpool just need to spot the other team a goal to start each game. The comebacks each week are starting to get ridiculous.

McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern is truly one of my favorite things to receive in the mail. What a delight. Worth every penny purely based on the package before even getting into the writing.

The combination of Arc and CleanShot X really make for some great screenshots.

Oh boy… talk about a bad take…

Been going through all my blogs, journals, photos, notes, etc. over the last three years in Seattle and this was a stand-out post for me. The public woodworking did dramatically decrease after this post though…

I’ve been thriving this past week on leftover Italian beef’s while my wife is away for work. Mail ordered Portillo’s is obviously far from ideal (both because it’s frozen and just Portillo’s…), but every bite makes me so happy.

Are there any good apps out there that can spit out nice looking text shots with the ability to customize fonts, colors, etc.? Sort of like Carbon does for code, but for Markdown. I documented some of my exploration here, but am not super happy with anything.

With the Cubs out, I don’t have a stake in the baseball playoffs, but I am rooting against the Dodgers, Astros, and Brewers.

Following through on our promise to make our Seattle friends some deep dish pizza and Italian beef sandwiches from Chicago before we move to Napa.

Whelp, adding backlinks to a Blot blog is a lot easier than I expected.

Ok, things are getting a little interesting now… daily.tiv.today looks like Are.na, but is powered by Blot, Dropbox, and Obsidian. So I can kind of, pretty easily, do the whole Daily Notes and mini-digital garden thing… Can’t (easily) show backlinks, but linking between posts with Blot/Obsidian is seamless.

No idea what I’m doing, but apparently I have a new blog… daily.tiv.today… why you ask… no clue. Will it last more than three days? Probably not.

On a positive note, I did get to tell an Astros fan that at least the Cubs didn’t need to switch divisions and cheat to win a World Series 🤣🤣🤣

Went to the Mariners game today. Seems like anytime I go to a Seattle game (of any team) they lose…

I feel like everyone is talking about how the new iPhones are disappointing, but the rounded edge natural titanium is the first phone I’ve truly desired since the X. I’m sticking with my 13 for now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I had a 15 in my hands in the near future.

My attempt to use Obsidian for work failed… tried to mess around with Notion a bit today, but just doesn’t mesh well with me still… Maybe it’s time to give Tana another go and see if it’s not still slower than molasses to load…

Building out a 2023 TV Show board on Aboard (will post shortly) to test it out a bit and am realizing just how many shows had their third (and a couple, fourth) and final season this year.

But now I’m thinking about using Obsidian for a Daily Notes blog that publishes through Blot in the Are.na template. Would need Blot to work with iCloud though so I could use Obsidian on iOS.

Spent more time tinkering with and configuring Obsidian tonight than I’ll probably end up spending actually using it. I did get it to sync through iCloud to my work windows machine though.

I was thinking about bringing back humdrum.life with Obsidian Publish, but apparently someone is still squatting on the domain since I let it expire in 2020…

Any CleanShot X users know if you can use its screen recording feature to record stuff from places like Max or Showtime where the native Mac screen recorder doesn’t work..?

Definitely seems to be something going on with Blot. Noticing some issues with my rss feeds and when I try to save edits to my template code, it just shows an orange bar and won’t save…

Nonsense SeptOct 2023

Is Ivory ever going to do anything about Mentions and Notifications… Still feels odd that I have to essentially clear out mention notifications from both places…

Latest batch of print, featuring friends of the Variable, @goodenoughllc@mastodon.world, and the terrific @InterzoneMag@mastodon.online

🛫 Getting ready to takeoff for SFO

My cousin told me people in San Fran hate when you call San Fran “San Fran” so now that I’m moving to the Bay Area I feel like my entire life’s purpose is to just say “San Fran.” all. of. the. time.

I know it’s still early in the games life, but I’m happy to say I’m in the top 50 (top 3%) of the leaderboard for Ollie Soars.

One thing that infuriates me is when I get a simple “Hi Kevin” ping at work, forcing me to respond before I know what they want. Maybe people see it as a way to be polite, but I know they know what they want to say, just get to the point!

Wow… another crazy one for Liverpool.

What are the odds Inter Miami FC goes undefeated for the rest of the season with Messi right now?

🏀 Up early at 5:30 to watch the US v New Zealand FIBA World Cup game.

Alright, I’m coming down the home stretch of this project on communities, but need to interview one more person… if you know someone (or are someone) who works in #InfoSec / #Cybersecurity please let me know, I’d love 30 minutes of their (your) time.

Ponder works real nice on mobile too, especially with the “Add to Homescreen” feature. Although the “X” icon you get if you do it from my group might give you some PTSD of a certain social media platform.

What was the name of that forum app that felt like it came and went super quickly? Did they ever launch on the web..?

Trying out a demo of Hobeaux (Semibold) for link posts on TIV (which is basically everything right now…). Not sure it fits… maybe four fonts is too many… but it does feel more legible than Casserole (Flare)… I’ll give the regular weight a go before making a final decision.

Got access to the Superlist beta today and it’s 100% not for me. Super slick, but the UX seems overly cumbersome to do simple things and I don’t need collaborative lists/tasks outside of work and already have a solution for that.

Think I’m one week away from getting back to my newsletter…

Woooooow what an ending for the Leagues Cup final!

One annoying thing that feels more prevalent in Seattle than other places I’ve been is groups of people standing in place, taking up the entire sidewalk and giving zero mind to people trying to actually walk by.

Todays win for Liverpool might’ve been the ugliest 3-1 victories I’ve ever seen. Nearly gave away 3 goals in the first 10 minutes and somehow escaped the first half up 2-1. And then the red card for Mac Allister at 58’ before they managed to add one more.

I’ve made a conscious decision that Kinopio, Futureland, and Are.na are the three platforms I want to be integrated into my daily life. Dropping things like Raindrop, mymind, etc. The question becomes the use cases for each and where/how they compliment each other.

I was already struggling to motivate myself to be productive this week and my wife’s job offer in Napa has eliminated any chance of me getting work done today…

Any Bay Area folks have recommendations of towns to live in that fall somewhere between Napa and Oakland (or SF) that are nice and not crazy expensive..?

Not a 100% settled at this point (more like 95%), but it looks like we are going to be moving to the Bay Area very, very soon.

Anyone have any upbeat/feel good album recommendations to help kick start the day in a good mood? Looking to get a bit outside of my regular rotation—nothing too poppy though…

🏟️ Jealous of my family back home in Chicago who were at Wrigley for that walk-off

I get it, 82 games plus playoffs is a lot. And it’s a job that’s taxing where you aren’t going to have your A-game every night. But come on…

~End of rant~

I’m hoping media and the league start framing things as “trophies” (in-season + finals) rather than championships (just finals) in a similar manner to European football with the national leagues, champions league and various cups.

While I’m still excited for the NBA in-season tournament, I can’t help but think how silly that statement is: “if the players care”. There’s a 100% a lack of pride problem, which I think mostly comes down to two things: 1) a spoiled entitlement from some players and 2) championship or bust culture.

The MLS/LigaMX Leagues Cup has been incredibly exciting. Part of it is Messi, part of it is two leagues, but ultimately, the players are into it. I struggle to see the NBA players care as much for their in-season tournament, even after considering it’ll also count towards the regular season.

⚽ Sitting down for some more Messi

📝 Been thinking about using Roam again a lot recently…

😭 Spending my Saturday night working to prepare for a hectic week while my wife is at a concert…

As ridiculous as it sounds… I’ve started using nasal strips and taping my mouth every night and it honestly makes a world of difference.

Anyone out there work in (or know someone who works in) an IT security related field? I’m doing some research for a client around communities in the #InfoSec space and am trying to do a few user interviews…

Talk about a perfect goal for Horan!

If you’re looking for a cool and cleverly named website based on the letter “X”, can I recommend “The Independent Variable”… 😝

🫠 Flying back to Seattle with a wedding hangover. The struggle is real.

Blot seems to be struggling a bit this evening…

Lastly, I think websites, blogs, magazines, and newspapers should be required to disclose if AI wrote or contributed to a piece of writing. Not just because of the the perception of being fooled or desire to avoid AI, but because of the consequences journalism and writing can have… looks around

Second, I’ve been thinking of either looking into how to get push notifications going with the web app of my site or potentially even getting it turned into an app (although both are probably outside my capabilities).

Can’t sleep with the time zone change… been thinking about a few things… First, I think I’m putting the tv/movie portions of my newsletter on hold given the strikes. Not that many people read it, but it feels weird promoting new stuff…

✈️ Heading back to Chicago. Again…

Whipped up a little icon for the PWA version of the blog.

It’s Wemby Time!

🧸 Back in Seattle after an exhausting couple of days in Chicago.

✈️ On the way to Chicago. Got the chance to fly first class for the first time.

Taking a last minute flight to Chicago tomorrow morning for a not so ideal situation. Hoping to at least catch up on Silo (and embarrassingly, Andor) on the flight…

🤢 May or may not be a bit hungover from hanging out at Pride Fest yesterday..

🏳️‍🌈 Walking in the Seattle Pride Parade with my wife’s work and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a tad bit nervous, given, looks around , America…

🛣️ In Spokane, WA / Coueur d’Alene, ID for the weekend…

Or maybe something like this…

Just playing around with some ideas…

Riffing on the NYT a bit, what’s a better tagline for the blog (obviously tongue-in-cheek):

The Link Blog of Record

Or…

All the Links That are Fit to Post (or Scan/Peruse/Something else)

Blot being down all day, I’m assuming because of AWS, has been a big bummer…

That moment when you realize you booked your haircut during the Finals game… 🤦‍♂️

Biiig day of releases.

Best mail day in a very long time.

Think I’m seconds from pulling the trigger on a 13” M2 MacBook Air and AirPods Pro…

But how do others see you in FaceTime when wearing Vision Pro…?

I want StandBy for iPad so I can use it as a dashboard with a bunch of widgets like Panic’s old Status Board.

Jimmy Butler guarding Murray from the jump tonight. I like Love on Gordon too.

🏀 Watching the NBA Finals — Game 2: Miami @ Denver. Hoping the Heat can pull this off.

Debating whether to do a Kinopio space for the game tonight…

the news vol. 023

the news vol. 022

Glyphs or no glyphs??? That is the question…

the news vol.021 from awhile back

Recent print deliveries from Are.na, McSweeney’s, A24, and Paris Review.

Some really interesting stuff out today. Hoping to get through a handful of these and get a real post up about what’s really worth checking out.

Saw the Kraken were up 2-0 so I decided to support the local team and throw the game on… within two minutes of turning it on it’s 2-2…

I still think about The Awl a lot.

Anyone read ESPN the Magazine back in the day and remember what the back page was called every issue..? I remember it being something like “:01 second” or “final second” or something like that and it was maybe a humorous, illustrated image related to sports…? But I can’t find anything online…

Finally remembered to switch Substack from receiving via app to e-mail. And I’ve added Curated and ConvertKit as possibilities of where to move my newsletter (alongside Buttondown, which is still my preferred, but pricier for what I want to do…)

It’s honestly really cool to see the blink guys back together on the Coachella stream.

Bulls are in a rock fight right now in Miami, currently up one, 68-67, entering the 4th quarter.

Feeling pretty good about the Bulls chances against the Heat tonight. Bulls swept them in the regular season and the Heat can’t hurt the Bulls downlow and on the boards.

New music I’m checking out today.

LaVine with 17pts in the third quarter (26 total so far) to cut the lead to 9 entering the fourth quarter… there’s a chance…

If you want to know how I’m feeling about the Bulls after one half tonight — I just ran to the grocery store for a 12-pack of Rainier during halftime…

The Raptors are just getting way too much, way too easily right now while the Bulls have been settling for mediocre shots. If it continues at this pace, we are in trouble. And I’m going to need more than just this Negroni.

As I’ve been trying to move away from Substack, I started playing around with Buttondown. Currently just using it to summarize posts from my blog, but I’ve got some other ideas as well, maybe…

Planning to live blog the Bulls game tonight, just not sure what to use… my blog (like I used to…), Kinopio, or something like Discord/Wavelength…

Nevermind… it’s $30/mo just to have multiple newsletters on Buttondown… 😩

I’m this close to moving back to Buttondown from Substack, but I really don’t love the idea of paying $10/mo for 80% of the functionality I’ve come to rely on with Substack…

Things like Notes and Threads make me not want to use Substack anymore…

I’ve slightly changed my internal thinking about how I use my various places on the web and so far I’m super happy with it and have felt the urge to actually post, blog, and link more. The eternal question is how long that urge sticks…

Sounds like Bob Odenkirk might show up in S2 of The Bear.

🐝 Time for Yellowjackets!

Updated The Independent Variable so it matches and aligns a bit better with foofaraw.

Little zine shop set-up

It’s pretty amazing how easy it is to set-up Stripe to sell stuff. Being able to embed something like this on my site is incredible.

Quality isn’t quite where I wanted to be, especially considering it ended up costing more than I planned. Still super satisfying to have a little zine I made in my hand. Three more left. If ordered after 12:00 tomorrow it’ll go out Monday when I’m back from Portland.

[[Brazil Lose]] [[World Cup]]
1 (2) - 1 (4) in PKs

⚽️ [[Neymar]] scored in the second half of extra time, which looked like the game winning goal…
⚽️ Bruno Petkovic scored minutes later for Croatia to send it to PKs

[[Rodrygo]] missed Brazil’s opening PK;
[[Casemiro]] made the second;
[[Pedro]] made the third;
[[Marquinhos]] missed the fourth - and final - with Croatia making all four of theirs.

Possession was even, but Brazil dominated on Shots with 21 and 11 on goal vs 9 and 1 on goal.

Now I am depressed…
Pulling for Netherlands (already down 0-1 at HT v Argentina) and Morocco now…

The only thing this movie needed less of was white people and Marvel tie-ins. I really enjoyed the Namor/Aztec background story they created for the film and Huerta played Namor terrifically, as one of the better Marvel villains, better than Killmonger even?

The last battle did seem to have some stilted timing things going on and there were a couple odd character decisions in the middle, but I’ll forgive them for that.

It sucks that it takes having to be Marvel to get an epic story of Afro-futurism and Aztec-futurism (is that a thing?) made in Hollywood because it’s really just the Marvel aspects holding this film back.

COBY!!!

Missed posting after Monday’s win vs Celtics.

  • Fun game that came down to the wire. First win for the Bulls this season in a close, clutch game 0-7 previously.
  • Had moments where there was actually defensive effort.
  • Fell in love with the three ball, which almost killed them. Think their final 8 shots were threes and all misses until [[Coby]] (4/7 from 3) hit one to tie, and then another on the next possession to take the lead, and then [[Vooch]] hit the nail in the coffin from deep as the shot clock dwindled.
  • All starts but Ayo hit double digits, with Coby and JaVonte reaching that mark as well and [[DeMar]] leading with a 36/4/8 line.

Starting to feel like they will never win again.
Only watched the first half tonight.
Honestly, didn’t hate how they played tonight; [[LaVine]] just couldn’t get anything going (1/14)… even with [[DeMar]] going for another 40 piece they couldn’t overcome that poor shooting.
Continue to like how [[Ayo]] and [[PatWil]] are playing. I think the high end goal should be for them to combine for ~30 — they went for 13 and 12, respectively, tonight.

[[Bulls Lose]] Vs Nuggets
6-8

Tough night for the Bulls yesterday. Only watched the first half, but the Nuggets are just a much better team and Bulls couldn’t really get anything going on either end.

  • [[DeMar]] has been struggling to get things going after a fast start–very well could be age a bit starting to show.
  • [[PatWil]] and [[Ayo]] continue to have moments and progress.
  • Defense continues to be the Achilles heel + lack of real PG in the starting line-up. Both of those things get solved if/when [[Lonzo]] ever returns (be it at full strength)…
    • Not that it will make the Bulls a real contender either way.

If you erase Q1, I was overall happy with the way the Bulls played. Ultimately, Philly has Embiid and that’s all that matters, especially when the Bulls get stagnant in Q4. Bench didn’t show up much today either given [[Ayo]] and [[Drummond]] being out.

[[Bulls Lose]] …

Missed the first half…

No [[LaVine]] tonight and disappointing shooting night for [[Vooch]]. [[DeMar]] came through again with 33 and [[Coby]] dropped in 19 along with a strong perf from the Dungeons and Dragon duo off the bench.
Despite the Bulls winning major categories: bench points, fast break points, second chance points - it wasn’t enough to win as Spurs edged them out in 3pt shooting.

Kathleen Kennedy’s stewardship of the movie franchise continues to baffle as a key right-hand exits and a new film, perhaps the one in development with Damon Lindelof, isn’t expected until at least 2025, six years after ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ With Marvel churning out multiple movies every year, such a massive pause is borderline corporate negligence.

Let’s go! [[Bulls Win!]]

No [[Lonzo]] - out for a couple months. No [[LaVine]] - out for who knows how long… starting to feel like the knee is worse than they are letting on… So [[Ayo]] and [[Caruso]] get the start.

Slow start for the Bulls, but they managed to keep it pretty close throughout the first half (after some really poor shooting) while being saved by [[Dragic]] being able to knock down some threes.
In Q3, [[DeMar]] went absolutely crazy, which the Heat could never really recover from. Ended up with 37pts and 9asts plus 2/3 from 3!
Shot wasn’t falling for [[Vooch]] , but he rebounded especially well (17) and played some really solid D on Bam, notching in 3 blocks.
Big surprise of the night was [[Ayo]] , who was 3/6 from 3 and went for 17/6/4 as the starting PG. He played aggressive all night, which was great to see. If he adds some real playmaking to his game he can be something.

If ever healthy, the “Bench Mob” could be back in Chicago. If you slide [[JaVonte]] In as the starting 4 to give that group some energy, you could have:
PG: [[Dragic]]
SG: [[Ayo]]
SF: [[Caruso]]
PF: [[PatWil]]
C: [[Drummond]]
The Dragic/Drummond combo is already humming and would give PatWil an oppt to play away from DeMar/LaVine so he can be more aggressive. Plus Ayo/Caruso on the wings who can shoot, play make, and defend. [[Coby]] ends up the odd man out, plus I think [[Dalen]] Terry will ease into some productive minutes as a rookie.

Great win for the Bulls to start the season in what will be a competitive East. Giving me a ton more hope than I had going in.
Felt so good to watch this group run again.

The Batman, 2022 - ★★★★

I loved the opening; there were some really great shots that felt pulled directly from comic book panels. Hated The Riddler costume and bane-ified voice. Loved The Riddler without those two things towards the end. Colin Ferrel and Zoe Kravitz were by far the best parts. The emotional scenes at the end felt unearned and unnecessary. Overall, it felt almost right up my alley except for some nitpicks and going a bit long.…

Nightmare Alley, 2021 - ★★★½

Some really great performances and an interesting story, shot in a moody way that I've come to love from GDT. However, it often felt stilted for me and the motivations for characters seemed to fall in the realm of "camp" at times.…

Licorice Pizza, 2021 - ★★★★½ (contains spoilers)

This review may contain spoilers. It's PTA so it's obviously pitch perfect in almost every way, but there was just something about it that prevented me from really being invested in it. I think the conceit of the relationship between a 15yo and 25yo kept me out a bit and I thought it should've just been a friendship between very different people rather than a romantic/jealousy thing.…

Last Night in Soho, 2021 - ★★★★★ (contains spoilers)

This review may contain spoilers. Found this exhilarating. Thought the performances were amazing and so much creativity, especially in blending the times early on. Probably doesn't deserve a full five stars—maybe it's realistic, but there was a heightened level of hysteria that felt a bit too much and made it drag at times.…

Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2021 - ★★★★ (contains spoilers)

This review may contain spoilers. There is an obvious fun that comes from "the multiverse" and bringing back all of these characters and just being in this world that I love, but there wasn't much else there for me. Felt like they started with wanting to bring all of these actors back and then worked backwards to make it happen.…
